Job Description California Licensed Journeyman Electrician – Utility Scale Solar Position Summary

The California Licensed Journeyman Electrician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, testing, commissioning, and repair of utility-scale solar PV systems and associated electrical infrastructure throughout California. This role supports construction, repower, commissioning, O&M, and emergency response activities while ensuring compliance with applicable safety regulations, electrical codes, project specifications, and company standards.

The ideal candidate possesses a current California Journeyman Electrician Certification, strong knowledge of AC and DC electrical systems, utility-scale solar equipment, medium-voltage systems, lockout/tagout procedures, and electrical testing methods. This position requires a safety-focused individual capable of working independently and leading field crews in a fast-paced utility-scale renewable energy environment.

Job Duties and ResponsibilitiesElectrical Installation and Construction

  • Install, terminate, test, troubleshoot, and maintain electrical systems associated with utility-scale solar PV facilities.
  • Install and maintain DC collection systems, combiner boxes, trackers, modules, string wiring, and associated balance-of-system components.
  • Install, terminate, and troubleshoot AC collection systems, inverters, transformers, switchgear, reclosers, and medium-voltage equipment.
  • Execute design changes, field modifications, and corrective work in accordance with approved engineering documents and project requirements.
  • Read and interpret electrical one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, construction drawings, specifications, and commissioning procedures.

Operations & Maintenance

  • Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on utility-scale solar facilities.
  • Diagnose and repair inverter, transformer, SCADA, tracker, DC collection, and AC collection system failures.
  • Conduct troubleshooting using electrical test equipment including multimeters, insulation resistance testers, clamp meters, thermal imaging cameras, and power quality analyzers.
  • Support outage response, emergency repairs, and system restoration activities.
  • Assist with root cause analysis investigations and implementation of corrective actions.

Commissioning & Testing

  • Perform electrical testing and verification activities.
  • Conduct continuity, insulation resistance, polarity, grounding, and commissioning tests.
  • Support energization activities and turnover to operations teams.
  • Verify equipment operation and document commissioning results.

Safety & Compliance

  • Maintain strict adherence to OSHA, NFPA 70E, California electrical regulations, and company safety policies.
  • Execute Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures and energized work protocols where permitted.
  • Participate in Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), pre-task planning, and daily safety meetings.
  • Identify and mitigate workplace hazards and stop work when unsafe conditions exist.
  • Promote and maintain a zero-incident safety culture.

Leadership & Documentation

  • Lead and mentor apprentices and junior electricians.
  • Provide technical guidance and field leadership to crews.
  • Prepare detailed service reports, inspection reports, commissioning documentation, and corrective action reports.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed, testing completed, and equipment status.
  • Coordinate with project management, site management, customers, and subcontractors as required.

Minimum QualificationsRequired

  • Current California State Certified Journeyman Electrician Card.
  • Minimum 4 years of electrical experience, with at least 2 years supporting utility-scale solar, renewable energy, industrial, or power generation facilities.
  • Working knowledge of:
  • National Electrical Code (NEC)
  • California Electrical Code
  • OSHA regulations
  • NFPA 70E
  • Lockout/Tagout procedures
  • AC and DC electrical systems
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, schematics, and construction documents.
  • Experience using electrical testing and troubleshooting equipment.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel throughout California as required.

Preferred

  • Utility-scale solar construction, commissioning, or O&M experience.
  • Medium-voltage (5kV–35kV) experience.
  • Inverter manufacturer certifications (Sungrow, SMA, Power Electronics, TMEIC, Gamesa, ABB, Siemens, etc.).
  • NABCEP certification.
  • OSHA 30 certification.
  • CPR/First Aid certification.
  • Experience with SCADA systems and power plant controls.
  • Experience performing utility-scale solar repowers.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment

At RNWBL, safety comes first.

  • Ability to lift, carry, and move materials and equipment up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, wind, and rain.
  • Ability to climb ladders, work at heights, and navigate uneven terrain.
  • Ability to stand, walk, kneel, bend, and perform physically demanding work throughout the workday.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including arc flash and fall protection equipment.
  • Ability to travel and support projects throughout California.

Licensure Requirement

Applicants must possess and maintain a valid California State Certified Journeyman Electrician Certification throughout employment. Compliance with all California licensing and prevailing wage requirements is mandatory for work performed on applicable projects.

Pay: $35.00 - $55.00 per hour
